FROM THE ANGLICAN BISHOP OF PORT MORESBY

Saving A Life The Easy Way by Bishop Peter Fox.

We all want to do something worthwhile with our lives.  The fact is every one of us can make a difference if we really want to.  If you knew there was a way that you could save someone elseÂ’s life would you want to know more?  Here is the good news; you can save a life. It will not involve you in taking any risks.  It will not cost you a toea, except perhaps your PMV fare and an hour or less of your time.  Become a blood donor.  Our medical services are desperately in need of blood supplies.  Every pint of blood that is given by kind people as blood donors can be used to help someone else.

Here is what you need to do; go to a blood donor day.  For people in Port Moresby there will be one next week, on the 7th. June, at the Catholic Theological Seminary in Bomana.  Go along anytime between 11.30 and 3.30 in the afternoon.  The people there will explain what you have to do. It is very easy.

It is not painful to give blood and it is not at all dangerous.  There is a short sharp prick, no worse than any other injection you might have, a small amount of your blood is collected and saved for use in operations and medical procedures that can help save a life, perhaps the life of a child.  You can just lie back and let others do the work.  Afterwards you can rest for a few minutes and then go home or back to work feeling fine.  You will not be asked to give more than a cup or two of blood, but it might make the difference between life and death for someone else.  You will not even miss that small amount of blood.  A healthy body will replace it naturally within a matter of hours and in any case you have buckets of the stuff left over, far, far more than you need.

Who knows? One day it may be you, or someone in your family who needs a blood transfusion.  You can imagine how grateful you would be that someone spent a little time to save a stranger’s life.

Yours sincerely,

Bishop Peter.
